Aging Skin Types

General Skin Care

Aging Skin Types (skin is always aging) can vary depending upon emotional health, age, health, and nutrition.  We should all know what type of skin we have in order to know how to best care for our specific skin.

There are five basic skin types so if you don't know which type of skin you have, look at the general descriptions below and then click on the links where given for more information.  All types of skin can benefit from general skin health and protection.

The Five Basic Skin Types:

Normal Skin-

With this type of skin the tissue shows no signs of oil.  Skin feels vibrant elastic and supple.  It's characterized as a good, healthy complexion.  With minimal care it will look good into older age.  It has no visible pores or blemishes and no flaky areas and glows with health from good blood circulation and excellent health.  General skin care is needed.

Dry Skin-

Dry skin cannot be ignored. Dry skin leads to cracking of the upper layer of skin and gives it a real bad appearance. The main causes of dry skin include: dry climate, hormonal changes, too much exfoliation and treatment of other skin disorders. Moreover, dryness could be the inherent nature of one’s skin. Whatever be the cause, ‘dry skin care’ is very important (but not very difficult). Continue...

Oily Skin-

Put simply, oily skin is a result of excessive production of sebum (an oily substance that is naturally produced by skin).

As we all know, an excess of anything is not good; so excessive sebum is bad too. It leads to clogging of skin pores, resulting in accumulation of dead cells and hence formation of pimples/acne. Moreover, oily skin spoils your looks too. So, ‘oily skin care’ is as important as the ‘skin care’ for other types of skin.  Continue....

Combination Skin-

Most women have combination skin.  The following are signs of this type of skin.

  • The tissue will have traces of oil coming from the nose and forehead
  • It is clean in the areas of the cheeks.  So it has patches of both dry and oily skin.

Care must be maintained for both types of skin.  The dry zones, usually located on the cheeks, and around eyes, should be treated with rich creams and moisturizers as for normal skin.  Oily areas, forehead and nose, should be treated as for oily skin.

Sensitive Skin-  If treated as normal, this skin type will cause poor skin health and premature aging.

Sensitive skin is one which is unable to tolerate any unfavorable conditions  (environmental/other), and which easily gets irritated on contact with foreign materials (including skin care products). For this reason, some products are especially labeled as sensitive skin care products. The degree of sensitivity can however vary from person to person (and depending on that, the sensitive skin care procedures vary too).  Continue....

Not Sure Which Skin Type?

If you're not sure about your skin type, get a professional opinion by visiting a dermatologist or you can visit the make-up counter at your local department store, such as Macys, Pennys or Nordstroms.

What Is Your Skin Tone?

Before you purchase make-up, first determine if your skin tone is light, medium or dark.  A professional opinion isn't needed here, but you should consider your coloring before purchasing make-up for the best results.  Again you can visit your local department store for a professional opinion.
