About Blushing

Did you ever wonder about blushing?
It  happens to everyone at one time or another, but for some people it can be a common occurrence.  What causes it's occurance.

Blushing is a sudden reddening of the face, neck and occasionally, upper chest.  It is the result of neurological flushing.

It occurs most often after a high level of stress or anxiety, such as someone giving a speach or presentation, being in charge of a meeting or social event where they do not feel comfortable.  They may feel a sense of insecurity or criticism from others.

Blushing also occurs without stress or anxiety. Some individuals are born to blush excessively without any apparent emotional stimuli. Blushing can cause severe embarrassment and frustration to anyone who experiences it regularly and it can often lead to social phobia or other anxiety disorders.

This can cause a compulsive state of being, called Erythrophobia, which is related to the fear of blushing.

About Blushing Causes

When we have to decide whether to face our fears or difficulties, the response to this exposes us to  environmental or emotional stimuli.  Our bodies responds via the sympathetic nervous system.  This causes the widening of small blood vessels (capillaries) just beneath the surface of the skin, causing a blushing response.

For most people the facial blushing takes a minute or two to disappear, causing only slight embarrassment. But some people experience severe and frequent blushing which can become a real hindrance.  It can affect a person's personal and professional life profoundly.  There are several treatments available for this problem.

Psychological Treatments
Cognitive behavior therapy:  a form of psychotherapy that helps weaken the connections between troublesome situations and how one reacts to them.  For example one is taught how to change the thinking patterns that cause us to blush.Drug treatments

Medical Treatment
Several medications are available to help with the condition of facial blushing.  Your doctor can help you find the one best for you.

There are:

  • Anxiety Medications:  These are used to help calm a person and reduce the frequency and/or severity of blushing.
  • Clonidine:  This is used to treat the embarrassing and uncontrollable facial blushing by reducing the widening of blood vessels that results in blushing.
  • Beta-Blockers:  These are used to manage the symptoms of anxiety such as blushing and heart palpitations.

Surgical Treatments
Blushing usually occurs simultaneously with excessive sweating. Endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy (ETS) is an effective means of surgical treatment to treat severe facial blushing and hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating).

There are risks associated with this surgery, so this procedure should only be used after other forms or treatment have not been successful.
